Investors are picking sides in a battle happening in the bond market that is seeing inflation expectations surge higher but nominal U.S. Treasury yields remain low and anchored in a tight range.
Why it matters: The disconnect between inflation expectations and the Treasury market could be driving much of the risk-taking behavior in assets like stocks, cryptocurrencies and commodities.
Break it down: Real yields — the yield on U.S. government bonds minus inflation — fell to an 11-week low this week and are headed back toward their all-time low close.
What's happening: While more money has plowed into stocks this year than over the last 12 years combined, investors also are buying record amounts of inflation-protected bonds (10 times the quarterly average of the past 20 years in Q1).
The big picture: Inflation has become the biggest worry among market participants and a growing discussion topic among American families who are seeing prices rise across the board. But expectations for continued price increases are no longer being reflected in the all-important Treasury market.
By the numbers: The 5-year breakeven rate (a measure of investors' inflation expectations over 5 years) rose to 2.66%, its highest since a spike in July 2008 and about 30 points from the highest levels ever recorded in the data series.
The bottom line: "There’s a tug of war within the market as to not just whether or not current price increases are transitory," says Quincy Krosby, chief market strategist for Prudential Financial. "But even if it is, how long does it last?"
Kathy Jones, chief fixed income strategist at Schwab, says she's not expecting double-digit inflation spikes as the U.S. saw in the 1970s, however, "I do think we could land at a higher level of inflation than we’ve had in the past," she tells Axios.
Why it matters: That may not seem like much, but it would mean the current rate of price hikes continues and would represent the highest inflation the country has seen in at least 25 years.
Officials in Afghanistan said Sunday the death toll from a vehicle bombing outside a school in the capital, Kabul, has risen to 58, and hospitals were treating "at least 150" wounded people, per Reuters.
Why it matters: Saturday's blast that killed multiple high school girls is at least the second to strike students in Afghanistan in a little over a week.
The big picture: No group has claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack, which occurred as the high school was hosting female students for classes.
Go deeper: Hillary Clinton, Condi Rice concerned about Afghan troop withdrawal

Several Asian countries are facing new coronavirus waves, with some struggling to keep up with some of the worst outbreaks since the beginning of the pandemic.
The big picture: While India accounted for half of the global infections this past week, per the World Health Organization, cases are surging in countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia, CNN reports.
By the numbers: "The Southeast Asia region reported over 2.7 million new cases and over 25,000 new deaths, a 19% and a 48% increase respectively compared to the previous week," WHO said in a press conference earlier this week.
What they're saying: "We need to act now and we need to act fast to have any hope of containing this human catastrophe," said Alexander Matheou, Asian-Pacific regional director for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The Ohio Republican Party on Friday censured Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio) and called for him to resign for voting to impeach former President Trump in January, Reuters reports.
The big picture: Gonzalez is the latest Republican lawmaker to be punished for voting to impeach the former president on a charge of inciting the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection.
What they're saying: Ohio Republican Party chair Bob Paduchik said in a statement Friday that the censure "addresses an unconstitutional, politically motivated process that served no purpose" — apparently referring to the impeachment of Trump, per Reuters.

At least 178 Palestinians have been injured in clashes with Israeli police in Jerusalem, Reuters reported late Friday.
The big picture: The clashes come amid growing anger over the threatened eviction of Palestinians from their homes on land claimed by Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem. Tensions have also escalated in the occupied West Bank in recent weeks.
What they're saying: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent session to address the violence, saying he holds Israel "responsible for the dangerous developments and sinful attacks taking place in the holy city."
A spokesperson UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Israel to "immediately halt all forced evictions, including those in Sheikh Jarrah, and to cease any activity that would further contribute to a coercive environment and lead to a risk of forcible transfer."
States are requesting fewer doses of the coronavirus vaccine as demand for the shots plummets, according to AP.
Why it matters: Over half of all American adults have now gotten at least one shot of a vaccine, and 42% of adults are fully vaccinated. But administering more vaccines may become more difficult because adults who are enthusiastic about getting vaccinated have likely already received at least one dose.
By the numbers, via AP:
Yes, but: Not every state is cutting back orders, and the Biden administration has said it will re-allocate the country's growing vaccine surplus to states and cities with increased demand.
The big picture: Some experts believe it's unlikely the U.S. will ever reach herd immunity.

Magomed ‘Black Lion’ Kurbanov (22-0, 13 KOs) took a significant step toward a world title shot, defeating former world titlist Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith (29-3-1, 16 KOs) on Friday in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Kurbanov won the WBO International Super Welterweight title, but more importantly, positioned himself closer to a world title opportunity against the winner of the upcoming unification between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano.
Scores were - 117-112, 115-113, 115-113, all for Kurbanov.
Russia’s Kurbanov (WBA/WBO #5, IBF #15) secured the type of signature victory that would announce himself on the world title stage. England’s Smith’s (WBO #2) previous defeats came in world title fights. In 2016, Smith suffered his first defeat (KO9) to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs), losing the WBO 154lb belt in his third title defense. Then in 2018, Smith lost a unanimous decision to Jaime Munguia, in an attempt to regain the WBO title. Smith had previously won three straight since losing to Munguia.
Kurbanov now figures to move up to #2 in the WBO behind Tim Tszyu (18-0, 14 KOs), of Australia. Tszyu is the son of Hall of Famer Kosta Tszyu.
The WBO champion, Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs), faces WBC/WBA/IBF champion Charlo (34-1, 18KOs) on July 17 to determine an undisputed champion at 154lbs. As other organizations sort out mandatory challengers, it seems natural that the WBO orders a final elimination bout between Tszyu and Kurbanov. Nonetheless, with all four belts being contested, top contenders at 154lbs figure to wait lengthy periods of time before receiving a world title shot.
With this big victory, Kurbanov at 25-years-old is destined to see his WBA and IBF rankings dramatically improve as well.
It didn’t come without a tough night. The bout between Kurbanov and Smith was hotly contested, the Russian native pulled ahead early, winning the first few rounds before Smith ultimately rallied during the midway point. While at times it seemed like Smith was ready to take over, Kurbanov responded with his own flurries until the final bell.
Smith, 32, will certainly make another title run as he again proved himself as a world-class operator. At this stage, a world title fight seems distant but at the domestic level, there will undoubtedly be lucrative opportunities for him.
The 12-round bout was promoted by RCC Boxing Promotions, who currently handle Kurbanov.

Everything was going the way Frank Sanchez envisioned it. The heavyweight contender was thorouhgly outboxing Nagy Aguilera on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders earlier tonight at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
While Aguilera was clearly overmatched, the heavyweight fringe contender showed no quit. Well, up until he did. After Sanchez seemingly grazed the back of the head of Sanchez in the sixth, Aguilera hit the deck. He attempted to make his way back to his feet but fell flat on his back in an over exaggerated sort of way. As the ringside doctor stepped in to examine him, Aguilera refused to get up.
In what appeared to be an attempt to pick up the win via disqualification, Aguilera's plan backfired as the scorecards were called upon. Shortly after, Sanchez was easily given the unanimous decision victory.

For better or for worse, Canelo Alvarez has become the face of the boxing world. In addition to carrying his homeland of Mexico on his shoulders, he also bears the burden of expectations. In just a few short hours, those aforementioned expectations will skyrocket as Alvarez takes on Billy Joe Saunders at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
In the mind of many, Alvarez should claim the WBO super middleweight title currently in possession of Saunders to add to his WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine titles. With so much on the line, Chris Algieri believes one bad performance could become an indictment against the Mexican star.
“There’s so much on Canelo’s back now,” said Algieri during an interview with Fight Hub TV. “He has to perform time and time out. He’s going out there four times a year so he really can’t have a misstep.”
Alvarez, 30, has rolled through the competition as of late. In May of 2019, the pound-for-pound star picked up a clear decision victory over former middleweight champion, Daniel Jacobs. He quickly followed up that win by moving up in weight and stopping former light heavyweight king, Sergey Kovalev before moving back down in weight to easily beat Callum Smith for his WBA, Ring Magazine and vacant WBC super middleweight titles. In his most recent ring appearance, Alvarez turned super middleweight contender Avni Yildirim into the laughingstock of the boxing world as he easily stopped him in the third round of their contest in late February.
Still, despite the long list of former champions and great fighters that are currently plastered on his resume, Algieri simply has a hard time when asked if he believes Alvarez will make it look just as easy against the Saunders.
“I just don’t think so,” continued Algieri. “He has an 0 for a reason. He goes out there and performs when he has to but he’s (Canelo Alvarez) been perfect and seems like he’s getting better and better. I don’t think it's going to be easy but I’ve got Canelo coming out mostly by decision.”
The post Chris Algieri: “There’s So Much On Canelo’s Back Now, He Really Can’t Have A Misstep” appeared first on BoxingInsider.com.
With his younger brother, Keyshawn Davis, also on the card, older brother Kelvin Davis (2-0, 1 KO) stepped into the ring first. In only his second pro fight, Kelvin took on journeymen Jan Marsalek (8-3, 7 KOs) on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe saunders at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas Texas.
After two fairly even rounds, Kelvin began letting his hands go early and often, hurting his man several times. With the victory seemingly in the bag, Marsalek took a huge step back and landed a monstrous left hand that sent Kelvin to the deck. While he appeared hurt, he managed to climb back to his feet and pull off the unanimous decision victory.

Don't shoot the messenger here, but it appears that the beyond long awaited heavyweight title matchup between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua might truly be set, and an announcement imminent. "That fight is done and you’ll get an announcement very soon," Joshua promoter and Matchroom honcho Eddie Hearn told Fight Hub TV's Marcos Villegas on a video released Friday. "Lot of people think we’re going to announce Saturday," said Hearn. "We might."
According to Hearn, "Fury's on board. AJ's on board. They all signed. They all agreed to the site agreement." Still, Hearn makes it clear in the interview, there's a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross. "But it is a lot of money and unfortunately, I can't just tell the lawyers to hurry up," he says. Plus, there's the matter of different outlets wanting to be in on the announcement. As Hearn makes clear, Fury-Joshua "has three or four other broadcasters (besides DAZN, who will be broadcasting Saturday's fight between Hearn represented fighters Canelo Alvarez and Billie Joe Saunders exclusively) who would quite like to be in on the announcement." The word Hearn chooses to use for the announcement date is "Saturdayish."
The public has frankly grown beyond exasperated waiting for the match between lineal and WBC titlist Fury and WBA, IBF, WBO and IBC titlist Joshua to be announced. Hearn has been teasing an announcement now for some time, which has led the whole affair at this point to induce eye rolls. There are signs, however, that this time, Hearn may be hitting his mark. For Fury, who has been openly critical of Hearn regarding the Joshua fight, has grown quiet in his criticism in recent days. What's more, the towering fighter actually went on Hearn's podcast this week - a good sign if ever there was one.
"The fact is, we’re coming through a pandemic," Hearn says in the interview. "We got sent the site contracts last Saturday. There's four sets of lawyers going on it all at different times zones. We've been on the phone all week." In other words, making the bout a reality has been no easy task. Understandable. But so is fan impatience. Major fights can now literally take years to become a reality - if they come to fruition at all - a thoroughly ridiculous aspect of the contemporary boxing game. Should Fury-Joshua become a reality, though, and should it be a good fight, all will most likely be forgiven.

Roy Jones Jr. has a tremendous amount of respect for Canelo Alvarez. The future first-ballot Hall of Famer has sat back and watched as the Mexican star has won world titles in four separate weight divisions and looked dominant while doing so.
Yet, despite how highly Jones Jr. thinks of the pound-for-pound star, he’s growing sick and tired of hearing most of the boxing world and their dismissive attitude towards his upcoming opponent, Billy Joe Saunders.
“It’s not easy,” said Jones Jr. during an interview with Little Giant Boxing. “Billy Joe can freaking box. A lot of people don't like him but Billy Joe understands boxing.”
Both Saunders and Alvarez are set to face off later on tonight at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas in front of 70,000 fans. Despite sporting an undefeated record through 30 fights, virtually no one is expecting the British product to walk away with the victory. Those sentiments, however, are something Jones Jr. simply doesn't understand. Although activity hasn't been on the side of Saunders, and his performances inside the ring haven't been noteworthy, when he’s on, Jones Jr. believes his chances of beating Alvarez are as good as anyone's.
“He’s been out for a little while and he doesn't look like he’s progressed a whole lot lately but he’s still a very smart boxer with boxing skills. Billy Joe can beat anybody.”
The combination punching, highlight-reel level knockouts and aggressive nature of Alvarez have him pegged as the number one boxer in the world, according to most. But while the attributes of the Mexican native have earned him numerous world titles, Jones Jr. is under the belief that his style is perfect for Saunders.
“Billy Joe’s best guys to fight against are those hard-hitting guys. They give him the opportunity to see it coming. He loves that. If he gets comfortable then he can become a problem.”
