April retail sales in the U.S. were unchanged from March, which saw a surge revised up to 10.7%, according to the latest Commerce Department report published Friday.
Why it matters: The U.S. has been entering a period of growing optimism in the wake of the vaccine rollout, falling new COVID-19 cases and deaths, and a slowly recovering labor market. Retail sales were up 51% year-over-year compared to April 2020.
By the numbers: Demand for goods fell as pent-up demand for services propelled spending for dining and drinking.
What to watch: The combination of stimulus checks, extended unemployment benefits, upcoming tax refunds and stockpiled savings looks to be a powerful accelerant for retail sales in the coming summer, back-to-work and back-to-school months.
Thousands of people rallied across the U.S. and the world Saturday following days of violence in Gaza and Israel that's killed at least 145 Palestinians, including 41 children, and eight Israelis, per AP.
The big picture: Most demonstrations were in support of Palestinians. There were tense scenes between pro-Israeli government protesters and pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Winnipeg, Canada, and Leipzig, Germany, but no arrests were made, CBS News and DW.com report.
Go deeper: Biden in call with Netanyahu raises concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza
President Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Saturday and raised concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza and the bombing of the building that housed AP and other media offices, according to Israeli officials.
The big picture: At least 140 Palestinians, including dozens of children, have been killed in Gaza since fighting between Israel and Hamas began Monday, according to Palestinian health officials. Nine people, including two children, have been killed by Hamas rockets in Israel.
The Israeli prime minister's office said Netanyahu told Biden that Israel is doing the utmost to avoid targeting civilians and claimed that the building with media offices also housed Hamas military facilities. Netanyahu also noted that those in the building had been warned before the attack, his office said.
Biden also spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian officials say.
Context: The latest fighting between Israel and Hamas began Monday following violence in Jerusalem over the planned evictions of six Palestinian families to make way for Israeli settlers.
Editor's note: This story has been updated with information about Austin's call with Gantz and the White House readouts of Biden's calls with Netanyahu and Abbas.
The U.S.' sharply declining rate of population growth threatens to put an expiration date on a country built around a vision of endless reinvention.
The big picture: Fewer people means fewer workers to support an aging population, fewer innovators with new ideas, less economic growth — and more of one thing: political fights over a shrinking pie.
By the numbers: At the end of April, the Census Bureau reported that between 2010 and 2020, the U.S. population grew at its slowest rate since the Great Depression and the second-slowest rate in any decade since the country's founding.
The impact: Countries with falling population growth — and eventually population decline — face serious economic, political and even cultural challenges.
Put those two trends together, and you have a formula for corrosive generational conflict and a country in long-term decline — which is exactly what a 2019 Pew survey about Americans' attitudes toward the future found.
Context: Slowing population growth is a reality throughout most of the developed world, as well as in China, where government data released this week showed the average annual population growth over the past 10 years was just 0.53%, the slowest in decades.
Yes, but: The U.S. has one option to keep its population growing that China and many other countries lack: immigration.
The catch: While the U.S. had a net migration of more than 1 million people a year leading up to 2016, that number fell to an estimated 595,000 in 2019, even before pandemic-led border controls closed the spigot further.
What to watch ... the progress of President Biden's immigration proposals, which would expand legal immigration while creating a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.
The bottom line: No country in the world has figured out a reliable way to induce citizens to have more children over the long term, which means the U.S. can live up to its self-conception as a "nation of immigrants" — or face a shrinking future.
The iconic spacefaring adventure "Mass Effect" is back today with "Mass Effect: Legendary Edition," a single, remastered version of all three games.
Why it matters: There is no series like "Mass Effect" — even when it comes to BioWare's other choice-driven RPGs like "Dragon Age." "Mass Effect" is a big ol' space adventure first and foremost, but it’s also about loyalty, love, and tough calls.
"Mass Effect" follows Commander Shepard — a hero players can customize for looks and gender — across three games as they wage war against a galactic threat known as the Reapers. Key choices carry through all three games, whether it’s who survives, or who you ally yourself with.
BioWare has also updated the game to be more inclusive.
The ending of "Mass Effect 3" ending was notoriously divisive among fans who believed their choices were ultimately inconsequential to the game's three outcomes; they signed petitions, made FTC complaints, and sent passive aggressive cupcakes.
What's next: A new game is currently in production — and seems to tie into the entire series so far.
Joel Greenberg, a former associate of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), has agreed to cooperate with federal investigators and admitted to a variety of federal charges including sex trafficking a minor, the New York Times reported Friday citing court papers.
Why it matters: Investigators believe Greenberg introduced women to Gaetz for paid sex and are looking into the Florida congressman's alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. Greenberg could be a key witness as federal prosecutors decide whether to charge Gaetz.
Details: Gaetz's name does not appear in the court filing, but Greenberg admitted that he recruited women for commercial sex acts and paid them more than $70,000 between 2016 and 2018, including at least one underage girl.
What's next: Greenberg is expected to plead guilty to the six federal charges in Orlando on Monday, per AP.
The big picture: Gaetz has faced a flood of backlash from both parties since the investigation became public.

Danny Roman put his 28-3-1 record on the line against the 25-3 Ricardo Espinoza in a scheduled 10 round super bantamweight affair Saturday at Carson's Dignity Health Sports Park. Espinoza had last been seen in the ring in August when he scored a UD win over Brandon Valdes. The popular Roman, on the other hand, had last been seen in September, when he bested Juan Carlos Payano via a UD win.
Both men threw heavy leather in the first. Espinoza pressed forward in the second while Roman counterpunched effectively. Things remained close and fast paced in the third. The fourth showcased just what a close fight it was, as both men fought aggressively. Roman looked to be the smarter fighter, but Espinoza seemed to throw the harder punches. The fifth was a battle for controlling the range, as Espinoza attached and and Roman fought to keep his man off his game.
Espinoza looked to want to pick his shots in the sixth. The seventh, like most of the fight, was fast paced and heated. Roman, however, managed to fit in a nice bit of sharp shooting. As aggressive and game as he was, Espinoza appeared by the eighth to be falling victim to Roman's counter punching. The ring doctor took a look at Espinoza before the ninth, but allowed him to fight on. By this point, however, it looked like Espinoza was taking a real beating, no matter how game he was (and he was incredibly game). The fight remained fast paced even in the tenth and final round, with Espinoza pushing forward and Roman counter punching crisply.
By scores of 97-93, 98-92, and 98-92, Roman walked away with the win.

The 31-0 Luis Nery put more than his record on the line Saturday night as he faced the 21-0-1 Brandon Figueroa in a scheduled 12 rounder for WBC and WBA super bantamweight titles. The 26 year old Nery won his WBC strap in his previous fight, in which he had bested Aaron Alameda via unanimous decision. Figueroa had won his WBA title by stopping Damien Vazquez the previous September. Saturday's bout was held at Carson California's Dignity Health Sports Park and was the main event of a card broadcast live on Showtime.
Both men fought aggressively in the opening round. Nery appeared to land well in the final minute of the chapter. Figueroa seemed to lunge forward with his shots a bit in the second. Each fighter slugged away in close during the third. Nery was able to put his punches together well. Both men fought very well in the fourth. Nery made it a point to fight more defensively in the fifth. Landing more effectively than his opponent in the sixth, Nery appeared to take the round. Figueroa landed well in the seventh. Then - suddenly - Nery went down. And was counted out.

Carl Froch has had the privilege of sitting ringside to watch unified super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez, up close and personal on several occasions. That trend continued as Froch observed closely as the Mexican star pummeled British native Billy Joe Saunders at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas last weekend.
Though their contest was fairly competitive, Saunders was ultimately left a broken man as Alvarez shattered his right orbital bone which forced Saunders to remain on his stool for the start of the ninth round. While the scorecards were somewhat close as two judges had it 6-2 in favor of Alvarez with the remaining judge having it 5-3 in the Mexican star's favor, Froch didn't view their contest as remotely close.
“He was having some success landing shots but Canelo was in control of the fight really,” said Froch following the win for Alvarez. “He was backing up Billy Joe and landing big blows and ultimately, he busted his eye socket.”
What’s next for the pound-for-pound star is an open-ended question. Currently, a showdown against IBF super middleweight titlist, Caleb Plant, is number one on the agenda of Alvarez as he attempts to become the first undisputed super middleweight champion of all time. If for some reason, that contest doesn't become a reality, Alvarez still has plenty of options. Showdowns against super middleweight contender David Benavidez and WBC middleweight champion, Jermall Charlo, is a possibility. So is a third matchup against long-time rival Gennadiy Golovkin.
To take things further, Alvarez could opt to move up to the light heavyweight division in an attempt to challenge himself against bigger men.
Regardless of what he decides to do next, Froch doesn't believe anyone will be able to compete with the pound-for-pound star. If however, in some twilight zone like dimension, WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford were to miraculously gain 20 pounds in weight, he would be the only person that could compete and possibly defeat Alvarez.
“The only fighter that I can see give Canelo any sort of trouble at all is unfortunately in a different weight division, Terence Crawford. He’s the only guy with the kind of class and ability to do anything with someone like Canelo just because of how good he is and his variety of work. Terence Crawford is too small, so who would you put him in with? There’s no one.”

The undefeated Xavier Martinez put his 16-0 record on the line Saturday night at Carson, California's Dignity Health Sports Park against the 34-4-2 Juan Carlos Burgos in a scheduled 10 round super featherweight affair. Martinez had previously been in the ring back in October when he defeated Claudio Marrero, courtesy of a UD. Burgos, on the other hand, had last been spotted over a year earlier when he earned an 8 round UD over Juan Ramon Bernal.
Burgos was aggressive in the first. Both men exchanged extremely well in the early part of the second and continued to perform well throughout. Both men continued to trade in the third. Matters remained tight and violent in the fourth. Although the battle remained intense, Martinez may have edged the fifth.
Burgos got Martinez in a corner and did excellent work in the sixth. Martinez was able to buckle Burgos' legs in the seventh. Martinez was comfortable fighting from the ropes in the eighth. Burgos looked to be slowing down in the ninth. Burgos was brave enough to press the action in the tenth, but Martinez was simply the slightly sharper puncher. Needless to say, the bout ended on a fitting, high octane note, with both men giving it their all.
The judges ruled in favor of Martinez by scores of 99-91 all around.

Despite the big wins and world titles currently sitting on his mantle, Daniel Jacobs always takes the time to sit back and reflect on how far he’s come.
After being diagnosed in 2011 with osteosarcoma, a common bone cancer, Jacobs has gone on to become a multiple division world champion and has shared the ring with some of boxing’s biggest names, including Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.
At the age of 33, Jacobs is fully aware that he’s much closer to the end of his career as opposed to the beginning. Still, that doesn't mean the New York native has any intentions of hanging up his gloves anytime soon.
“I would say I have at least a good three or four years in me left,” said Jacobs during an interview with Brian Custer on the Last Stand Podcast. “I’ve had a tremendous career and I look forward to building my legacy.”
In building his legacy, Jacobs (37-3, 30 KOs) has a bit of refurbishing to do. The switch hitter put on an uninspiring performance against journeymen Gabriel Rosado in his most recent ring appearance. Heading into their showdown, the prevailing thought process was that Jacobs was simply too fast, too strong and flat out too good for Rosado. Regardless of that notion, Jacobs struggled mightily before eking out a highly controversial split decision.
With several months to analyze his performance, Jacobs admits that it wasn't his proudest moment in the ring. With that said, there were certain factors behind his lackadaisical approach.
“My last performance wasn't my best performance,” continued Jacobs. “I hate to really make excuses but there were a lot of things going into that fight. I mentally couldn't be at my best.”
Putting his recent outing to the side, Jacobs believes he has plenty to be proud of. He’s picked up several notable wins against the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Peter Quillin. The New York native is now campaigning at super middleweight, and is currently riding a two fight win streak. Considering the names already plastered to his resume, Jacobs believes that if he can simply win another world title in his new home, he will have done enough to reach his ultimate goal.
“I want to be a Hall of Famer. I think it would solidify it if I became a two-division belt holder. Also, if I fought some of the key names. I just really want to give the best version of myself. When my career is done, I want to look back and say I gave it my all and I gave my life to the sport of boxing. I want to be proud of what I’ve done.”

Luis Nery and Brandon Figueroa square off tonight in what fight fans anticipate to be an all-out war between two undefeated Mexican champions. The action takes place from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson and will be televised live on Showtime (9p ET/6p PT). Nery’s WBC Super Bantamweight World title and Figueroa’s secondary WBA title will be on the line. The winner moves onto a unification with Stephon Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) in September.
Nery (31-0, 24 KOs) and Figueroa (21-0-1, 16 KOs) present very different physical attributes, yet what they possess most in common are their all-action pressure styles. Both champions hit very hard and have shown defensive vulnerabilities, which leans toward a brawl for however long this championship bout lasts. Figueroa will have both a three-inch height and five-inch reach advantage over Nery, and it will be extremely interesting to see if he displays that difference throughout this title fight.
In the biggest fight of his career, I say Figueroa will.
I will go against the grain and predict an upset victory for Figueroa tonight, where he surprises most by mixing boxing and brawling to befuddle the experienced champion in Nery. Figueroa’s size will allow him to absorb heavy shots from Nery, which he will have to if he hopes to come out victorious.
Nonetheless, the winner of tonight's anticipated clash will move on to a high-stakes unification against Fulton, who won the WBO world title in January when he defeated former world champion, Angelo Leo, in an absolute firefight. Whoever opposes Fulton that night will expect to be in yet another action fight.
Where does the loser of tonight’s bout go?
With the WBC/WBO belts locked up for 2021, WBA/IBF champion, Murodjon Akhmadaliev (9-0, 7 KOs) is headed towards a mandatory title defense later this year against Ronny Rios. There are still some great fights to be made in the division, and the loser can still expect to see himself in big fights moving forward.
Here are some of the options for the loser.
Opening the Showtime telecast Saturday night is former unified champion Daniel Roman (28-3-1, 10 KOs) facing off against Ricardo Espinoza Franco (25-3, 21 KOs) in a ten-round bout. Roman has been actively seeking a rematch with Akhmadaliev after losing his titles in their first bout by a razor-sharp split decision. Yet, with all belts currently tied up, the winner of Roman-Franco can see themselves in a meaningful fight next, possibly against the loser of Nery-Figueroa.
Raeese Aleem (18-0, 12 KOs) burst onto the 122lbs title scene with two scintillating Showtime performances in the Mohegan Sun bubble. Most recently, Aleem shined bright during an eleventh-round knockout over previously undefeated Vic Pasillas, who he dropped four times. Aleem is calling out all the champions and a fight against the Nery-Figueroa loser would be mouth-watering.
Leo (20-1, 9 KOs) looks to rebound after losing the WBO title to Fulton in January. He will face off against Aaron Alameda (25-1, 13 KOs) on June 19th in Houston on Showtime. Alameda most recently lost a title fight of his own, a unanimous decision against Nery this past September. The fight was hotly contested and any combination of Nery-Figueroa and Leo-Alameda that does not end in a Nery-Alameda rematch would be absolutely great for TV.
